HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 16
(By Delegates Flanigan and Kelley)
Requesting that the board of education consider the Great Irish
Famine of 1845-50, for study by school age students, in the
next cycle in which the history/social science curriculum
framework and its accompanying instructional materials are
adopted for the grades kindergarten through twelve.
Whereas, Many Irish-American individuals are citizens of the
State of West Virginia; and
Whereas, The Irish Famine of 1845-50 resulted in a
significant migration of people to this country, thereby
affecting American and West Virginia culture in varied and
significant ways; and
Whereas, The Irish Famine of 1845-50 has importance to the
Irish-American citizens of this State, as it is part of their
heritage, as well as the heritage of this country; and
Whereas, The Irish Famine of 1845-50 has historical
significance and is worthy of study by the school age children
of West Virginia; therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Delegates:
That the Great Irish Famine of 1845-50 be considered in the
next cycle in which the history/social science curriculum
framework and its accompanying instructional materials are
adopted for the grades kindergarten through twelve and that the
Great Irish Famine of 1845-50 be integrated into the curriculum
for school age children; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to
forward a copy of this resolution to the superintendent of
schools and the state board of education.
